Collaged Photographs: Selected Works of Rupesh Man Singh

An artist and photographer based in Kathmandu, Rupesh Man Singh is part of the collective called Film Foundry which operates as a studio and a pedagogic space for the practice of analogue photographic processes. Singh works with a variety of techniques including collage, scanner photography, cut-outs and experimental photo-chemistry to create poetic and exploratory images.

The artist’s family, childhood and identity operate as the main themes in the selection featured here. Working with photographs of his grandfather along with found objects and images, Singh has created a series of works that progress to create narratives. Such narratives are playful and emerge from the contingency of the moment and the medium itself.

Common to this diverse collection is the material manipulation and construction of images. Singh engages with a variety of found textures and materials like postage stamps, envelopes, cigarette packet wrappers etc., to create layered meanings. Talking about his intuitive process in an email conversation, he says, “I see photographs as objects, physicality matters to me. A lot of my recent works are around the ability of a photograph to operate as a physical object.”
