Tijmali, one of the hills in the Gandhamardan range of Odisha’s Eastern Ghats, is revered by Adivasi and non-Adivasi communities as the sacred abode of their deity, Tij Raja. However, Vedanta and Odisha’s corporate mining lobby consider it to be merely a deposit of extractable minerals. Standing at the forefront of this conflict, the women leaders of the Ma Maati Mali Surakhya Mancha (MMMSM) have been leading the struggle to defend their land, forests, streams and sacred landscape.
